Despite the name, onyx is actually an aggregate variety of calcite that was recently found in Pakistan. It is formed from layers of different calcite marbled together. Onyx Calcite is a striking variety of calcite that exhibits beautiful banding, often resembling traditional onyx but with a softer composition. Like all calcite minerals, it is a form of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃). The banding is formed by the deposition of calcium-rich water in caves, hot springs, or sedimentary environments over thousands to millions of years. The layers result from varying mineral impurities, including iron oxides, which create shades of yellow, brown, white, pink, and even green.
